How to Shoot Agency-Ready Model Digitals at Home with Your Phone

Published October 2026 • 7 min read • Scouting Director Approved

You do not need a \$2,000 professional photoshoot to get scouted by top modeling agencies. In fact, most top agencies like IMG, Storm, Ford, and Next actively reject overly retouched studio photos. They want raw, honest, natural digitals (also called polaroids).

Rule 1: The Golden Lighting Setup (Natural Window Light)

Never use direct ceiling lights, heavy bathroom vanity lights, or on-camera flash. Stand 4 to 6 feet away from a large window during daylight hours.

  • Soft diffused daylight: An overcast day or indirect morning/afternoon light is ideal.
  • Light direction: Face directly towards the window so light evenly illuminates your eyes and jawline without harsh cast shadows.
  • Clean plain background: Use a flat white, off-white, or neutral light gray wall.

Rule 2: Wardrobe & Hair Preparation

Agencies want to see your natural silhouette and bone structure:

  • For Women: Fitted black or white tank top, skinny black jeans or clean dark denim, simple black heels (heels give proper leg posture). Hair down and natural for one shot, then pulled back in a clean ponytail for another. Zero makeup or minimal tinted moisturizer only.
  • For Men: Fitted plain black or white crewneck t-shirt, dark jeans, simple boots or clean dress shoes. Clean-shaven or natural groomed facial hair.

The 4 Mandatory Angles Every Agency Requires

01 / HEADSHOT

Direct Face Portrait

Chest-up framing, relaxed neutral expression, looking directly into the camera lens.

02 / PROFILE

Side 90° & 3/4 Profile

Turn 90 degrees sideways with hair tucked behind your ear to display jawline and nose bridge.

03 / FULL LENGTH

Head-to-Toe Standing

Camera positioned at waist/hip height (not tilted downwards) to show authentic body proportions.

04 / COMMERCIAL LOOK

Smiling / Personality Shot

Warm natural smile showing teeth, essential for commercial brand casting.
