What is a Modeling Comp Card? The Complete Industry Guide

Published October 2026 • 6 min read • Reviewed by Fashion Casting Directors

A comp card (short for composite card, also commonly known as a zed card) is the universal business card of the modeling industry. It serves as a visual résumé that showcases a model’s range, versatility, facial bone structure, and physical measurements.

Why Do Casting Directors Require Comp Cards?

In high-paced commercial and editorial casting sessions in fashion capitals like New York, Paris, Milan, and London, casting directors review hundreds of talent submissions every day. A physical or PDF comp card allows scouts to evaluate your look in under five seconds:

  • Instant visual verification: Confirms what you look like with minimal makeup, natural lighting, and current hair color.
  • Accurate garment fit: Wardrobe stylists use your measurements (height, bust, waist, hips, and shoe size) to verify clothing fit before booking.
  • Direct agency contact: Provides immediate booker phone numbers and emails for casting option calls.

Anatomy of an Agency-Grade Comp Card

Professional comp cards follow a strict two-sided format:

1. The Front Side (The Hook)

The front features one clean, unretouched, magnetic hero portrait (headshot or beauty look). It displays the model’s name prominently, along with the agency logo and city representation.

2. The Back Side (The Portfolio Spread)

The back contains a 2x2 grid or triptych of 3 to 4 varied looks: full-length body shot, 3/4 side profile, commercial smile, and an editorial pose. Below the images sits the complete measurement specification table and contact info.

Physical Print vs. Digital PDF

While physical 5.5" × 8.5" cardstock prints are still standard for in-person open calls and go-sees, modern casting takes place digitally. Having a high-resolution 300 DPI vector PDF ready on your phone or email is essential for digital auditions.
